May 2022: Predicting Daylighting Performance with New Modeling and Analysis Tools
Daylight is the reference standard by which all other light sources are compared and can be particularly beneficial in achieving sustainable building design goals. This presentation will discuss the physical and psychological importance of daylighting, and will examine how optically complex fenestration products such as tubular daylighting devices (TDDs) can be used to optimize daylighting solutions. Neall will also explore new, better-defined performance metrics for measuring daylighting as well as a new daylight simulation tool that can help architects and designers quickly apply key daylighting metrics and accurately predict daylight performance when designing with optically complex fenestration products.

Speaker Bio
Neall Digert, Ph.D., MIES, Vice President of Solatube International, Inc., has over thirty-five years of consulting and education experience working in the energy/lighting/daylighting design and research fields, specializing in the design and application of advanced lighting and daylighting systems for commercial building applications. He possesses a unique technical background in optical daylighting systems, architectural daylighting solutions, and advanced energy and lighting strategies, and the psychological and physiological impact of light on humans. As Solatube’s Vice President, Dr. Digert draws upon his expertise in the design and consulting arenas to build public awareness of new optical daylighting technologies, guide future product developments and refinements, develop new global sales and marketing strategies, and pioneer new design and application tools and protocols to support the successful integration of optical daylighting products into today’s commercial, educational, and industrial buildings. Dr. Digert is active in the global daylighting design and performance metric development process, serving as Director of the Illuminating Engineering Society’s (IES) from 2011-2013, Vice Chairperson of the IES Daylighting Committee, a founding member and Chairperson of the IES Daylighting Metric Committee and co-developer of the Spatial Daylight Autonomy (sDA) and Annual Sunlight Exposure (ASE) metrics, Vice-chairperson of the NEMA Daylighting Management Council, chairperson for the NEMA Daylight Management Council’s Daylighting Symposium Task Group, Second Vice President of the Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) Skylight and Sloped Glazing Council, and Chairperson for the National Fenestration Rating Council’s (NFRC) Tubular Daylighting Device Task Group responsible for developing the VTannual product testing and performance standard for Optically-complex fenestration. Dr. Digert’s technical background encompasses illumination engineering, building energy engineering, and the psychology of perception relative to luminous environments. Dr. Digert holds a Bachelor of Science degree in architectural engineering, a Master of Science degree in building energy/civil engineering, and a Doctorate in building energy/civil engineering, all earned at the University of Colorado.
